Today, the San Antonio Express-News featured Atma Energy CEO and co-founder Supratim Srinivasan, who cautioned that new Treasury Department rules for renewable tax credits could derail the progress Texas has made toward energy independence.
“These policies amount to a direct attack on American energy dominance,” Srinivasan said. “By shrinking access to tax credits, we’re creating an artificial scarcity of resources. That scarcity will translate into more blackouts, higher energy bills, and greater dependence on unstable grids.”
Why It Matters
Tax credits are tightening: Homeowners face the expiration of the 30% solar tax credit at year’s end, and commercial developers must begin projects before July 2026 to qualify.
Demand is skyrocketing: Texas’s population growth and the rise of energy-hungry data centers are pushing the grid beyond capacity.
Projects are stalling: Developers face multi-year hurdles, from land acquisition to ERCOT interconnection, making it nearly impossible to launch new projects without strong financial backing.
Srinivasan warned: “When energy supply is constrained, prices don’t just rise, they keep rising. Texans have already seen their costs nearly double since 2020, and without action, it won’t stop there.”
Why Solar Still Wins
Despite policy headwinds, Atma Energy maintains that solar is still the strongest option for Texans:
Independent & resilient: Rooftop and distributed solar reduce reliance on the centralized grid, lowering blackout risk.
Cost-competitive: Even without federal tax credits, solar provides long-term savings as utility prices continue to climb.
Future-proof: As demand grows, solar remains one of the few scalable solutions that households and businesses can directly control.
“Atma was built on the idea that energy should be transparent, reliable, and affordable,” Srinivasan added. “No matter how the rules change, solar remains the best way for Texans to take control of their energy future.”
