For many homeowners, signing a solar contract feels like the biggest milestone in the process.
The next few weeks are typically spent designing your system, preparing engineering plans, obtaining the necessary approvals, and coordinating the work needed before installation can begin. While every project is different, understanding the steps involved can help you know what to expect and why some stages take longer than others.
Although timelines vary depending on your location, utility company, and local permitting requirements, many residential solar projects follow a similar sequence of steps. This guide explains how Atma Energy manages the process from contract signing to Permission to Operate (PTO).
Step 1: Design, engineering and paperwork
Once your agreement is signed, your project moves from your Solar Advisor to our design and operations teams.
They begin creating the technical plans needed to build your solar system. This includes engineering drawings, electrical layouts, equipment specifications, and the documentation required for permits and utility approval. If your neighborhood has a Homeowners Association (HOA), approval may also be required before installation can move forward.
This stage is one of the most important parts of the project because it ensures your system is designed specifically for your home and complies with local building and electrical requirements.
While you may not see much happening at your home during this time, there is a significant amount of work taking place behind the scenes.
Step 2: Permits and utility approvals
Once the design has been completed and reviewed, the required documents are submitted to the appropriate authorities.
Depending on where you live, this may include your local building department, your utility company, and your HOA. Each organization reviews the project independently before granting approval.
This stage is often the longest part of any solar project because approval timelines are largely outside an installer's control. Local permitting offices and utility companies each have their own review processes, which can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
Although waiting can be frustrating, these approvals help ensure your system meets safety standards and can be connected to the electrical grid correctly.
Step 3: Installation
After the required approvals have been received, your installation can be scheduled.
At Atma, most residential solar installations are completed in two to four days, although the exact timeline depends on the size and complexity of the project.
During installation, the mounting system, solar panels, inverter, and electrical equipment are installed and connected. To safely connect the solar system to your home's electrical service, we may need to coordinate a temporary power disconnect with your utility company. This interruption is planned in advance and typically lasts between four and six hours.
Once the equipment has been installed, the system is tested to make sure everything is operating as designed.
Step 4: Inspections and permission to operate
Installing the equipment does not automatically mean your solar system can be switched on.
Before the system begins producing electricity, it must pass the required inspections. Depending on where you live, this may include an inspection by your local electrical authority followed by a final inspection or approval from your utility company.
After these requirements have been completed, the utility issues what's known as Permission to Operate (PTO). This is the official authorization allowing your solar system to begin generating electricity.
Until PTO has been granted, we'll leave your system turned off to comply with utility requirements.
Why the process takes time
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that installing the solar panels is often the quickest part of the project.
Much of the project timeline is spent on design, engineering, permitting, utility reviews, inspections, and scheduling. Although these steps take time, they're an important part of making sure your system is designed, installed, and connected properly.
Understanding the process ahead of time can make the waiting period much less stressful because you'll know what's happening, even when much of the work is taking place behind the scenes.
